We’ve all done it. 1. Master the Universal Search Bar

The simple but most powerful tool you have is the universal search bar on the top of your web interface; it is the first and best place to turn for any message retrieval task.

When you do this, simply click on the magnifying glass icon (or the search field itself). Now begin typing any keyword, name, or phrase you think would help you find the message or conversation. Then the web will quickly display all of the results for you in a very neat way. As you type, it will show you all matching chats and contacts at the top, followed by each message containing that keyword below. When you click on a message result, it will take you straight to where that message is in the conversation in question and will highlight that for you.

2. Search Within a Specific Chat or Group

Supposedly if you already know which chat / group the message was hidden in, you can narrow down your search to produce even more specific results. An excellent method in very busy groups where the keyword is mentioned more than once.

You’ll find this on the individual chat page, or in the chat you’re using at the WA Web site. On the header of the chat, you should see a three-dot menu icon (also often called the “more options” menu). Click on it, and select “Search”. It will open a dedicated search bar just for that conversation. Type in your keyword, and press enter. All instances of that word or phrase in that chat will now be displayed. Use the up and down arrows next to the search bar to jump between each instance until you find the message you’re looking for.

3. Utilize Date Navigation to Narrow It Down

Occasionally you might not remember a keyword but you are reasonably sure when the message was sent – this is where WhatsApp Web date jump capability really comes in handy.

On the relevant chat page, select the time or date with which you wish to go (within the message bubble timeline on the right side of the screen). Thankfully wa web has its own gallery of media, links, and documents for each chat. Sign in to the chat and click the contact (or group) name on the top. The panel that appears will reveal categories like “Photos”, “Videos”, “Links”, and “Docs”. Clicking any of these will show you a grid or list of all items that have been shared in the chat sorted from newest to oldest. So you can simply scroll through this visual history of shared items (without having to read through every single message) to find that lost picture or document.

5. Combine Search Techniques for Best Results

Well the real power of these tools comes when you combine them. To start with doing a general search ( using the universal search bar to find out which chat the message is in ) then go into that chat and use the “Search in chat” function using a more specific keyword, if there are still too many results try to remember if it was sent around a certain time then use the “date jump” to get you where you want to be. For media you can also leave text search and head straight to the media gallery.
